TikTok is here to stay. Have you been paying attention?

Tiktok, the social media network that we don’t seem to quite understand, continues growing proving all that didn’t take it seriously that it’s here to stay. The app that started as a Gen Z favorite, has started grabbing Millenials and even Gen Xers turning them into not only spectators, but also creators. And this seems to be only the beginning. So we either embrace the platform and adapt to how future generations interact with social networks, or get left behind.

TikTok’s Growth in the United States

According to eMarketer, in the next 2-3 years, TikTok will have over 55 million users in the United States alone.

When compared to the giants, Facebook and YouTube, it is still not a contender but it’s getting closer and closer; and they all know it. In the graph below, notice that TikTok was the second most used mobile app in the United States in September 2019.

The demographics paint a picture that is no surprise to us, 63.5% of TikTok users are between the ages of 10-29. But as Millennial and Gen X influencers continue expanding their creative outlets, it is only a matter of time until their followers end up adding TikTok into their social media mix.

Let’s take a look at these numbers from 2019. There was a 1533% increase in the amount of users that engaged with TikTok in 2019 when compared to 2017. During that same period, Facebook saw a decline, with -26%.

TikTok vs Facebook

Now as expected, Facebook is not going to just let TikTok grab this big of a market share. And it’s been testing and launching in select markets a few apps similar to TikTok. In 2018, we found out about Lasso and now in 2020 there’s Collab. Will any of these be a success? It’s too early to say. But it is clear they are aiming to dethrone TikTok as the most popular app for teenagers.

Brands on TikTok

Ok, so you are convinced; your brand needs to be on TikTok because there’s a case to be made about reaching a younger audience. What now? Well, I suggest taking a look at some of the top brands on TikTok and research their content. The good thing about this platform is that you can still enjoy the content without having to sign up. This gives you a good opportunity to explore the content before committing to it. Here are five to get you started:
